Scholar Spotlight!

Malia is a 7th grade scholar participating in Buffalo Prep’s Middle School Prep Year-Round program, an extended enrichment opportunity for students who successfully completed the Middle School Prep summer program.

  • What grade are you in? 7th grade
  • What school do you attend? Tapestry Charter School
  • How long have you been a part of Buffalo Prep?  Since last summer
  • What do you like best about Buffalo Prep? The teachers.  We can talk about things that are going on in the world now, and we can joke around and talk about random things.
  • What’s your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school is social studies because I love learning about history and important people from history.
  • What’s your favorite subject at Prep? At Prep, as of right now my favorite subject is L.I.F.E with Ms. Rivera. In that class, we journal on how our day is going, we draw, we have a stress kit, and we have a thing called the “Question of the Week.” All of those things are things I like, but I also just like Ms. Rivera because I love her vibe and the way she treats her students.
  • Who inspires you? Why? My mom because she pushes me to be the best version of myself and to do my best work. She pushes me to never give up when something is challenging or hard.  She helps me, but she also won’t let me give up no matter how hard I cry or whine. She tells me to never let someone disrespect me or my family.  She never lets anyone talk to her with disrespect or talk about her family in a bad way, and that influences me in a way that nothing else will.
  • What is your favorite movie? The Nightmare Before Christmas because that movie helped me realize you shouldn’t change yourself because you feel like someone else doesn’t like you that way.
  • Favorite food? Chicken nuggets because they are AMAZING!
  • Favorite song? Red Desert by 5 Seconds of Summer, but I also like other songs made by them.
  • Favorite TV show? Criminal Minds because I love solving crimes but also learning about new things.
  • Someday I want to be an aerospace engineer for NASA or a behavioral analyst for the Behavioral Analysis Unit in the FBI. I want to work for NASA because I would love to learn about the different life forms in space but also about all the stars and every part of the galaxy.  I want to work for the FBI because I want to put away all the bad people in the world but also get some of them help for any disorder or brain disease they have.
  • Hobbies/interests: Video games, camping, reading, and playing basketball. Really anything I can do with my family or pets I love to do.
  • What’s something unique about you? My love for animals.  I love any type of animal because almost every animal is cute, unique, or fierce, and I love animals like that because they remind me of myself. I knew I would love animals because I live with two dogs. I love them to pieces and any way I can spoil them, I will!
