Lester Powell is a proud graduate of the Buffalo Prep class of 1993. He was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and grew up on the East Side of Buffalo, attending #59 Science Magnet and then attending City Honors School beginning in 8th grade. Lester admits that high school was not the most positive experience for him as he struggled to find his footing and failed to take advantage of the opportunities being given. Buffalo Prep then provided him with a way out when they contacted him during senior year, letting him know that they had a fee-waived college application for Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. So, he applied and was accepted and given a scholarship to a school 90 miles east of Buffalo.
Lester approached his four years at Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a new mindset, where he took advantage of all the opportunities afforded him, from studying abroad in Bath, England (including his first plane ride), to becoming Vice President of the Hobart Student Government, to being inducted into all the Honor Societies every year, to eventually graduating on time with a 3.5 GPA.
After graduating from Hobart College, he went right into his Master’s program at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he earned a Masters in Elementary Education. He is currently serving in his tenth year as the proud principal of Tulsa School for Advanced Studies as part of LAUSD. He graduated from the University of Southern California in August 2019 with his Doctorate in Urban Education. He resides in Los Angeles just a few miles from Downtown Los Angeles, with his partner, Bennie, and their 14-year-old son, Alex, along with their dogs, Tank, Chase, and Jaxx.
